Ignorance & Racism are NEVER okay
I watched a beautiful woman today, get called a bitch and told to return to her country, simply because she wore a hijab. She was only 16 and was getting harassed by an older white male while I was trying to cash out my groceries because his five apples he bought cost $2.05 and he thought that was too much money for 5 apples. It always blows my mind how individuals feel like they can say and do anything they please.
This woman handled the situation with such grace and maturity - it only made me think this is probably not the first time she has encountered such ignorance. However, the older white guy refused to leave and continued to harras her as she was ringing through my groceries.I have never been so disgusted with an individual in my life.
As a white individual, I find that not always can I step in to defend other women in a situation as I, unfortunately, hold a privilege in society not everyone has the luxury of having. However, this young woman asked him repeatedly to leave and he refused. She called her manager over (who was an older lady of non-caucasian decent) - who then tried to just explain to this man they cant change the prices and that he could file a complaint on his way out… this only esculated the situation and he just became more upset and agressive towards both women as they “should just go back to their countries” (directly quoted from his ignorant comments towards them) - so much so that I had heard enough racist, ignorant comments I said to him “Sir if your done shouting - please take yourself and your racist bullshit and exit through the front fucking doors” (I then pointed in the direction of the doors) and said “They are right there and I think its time you left - if you do not I will have you removed by an officer” He then proceeded to give me the fingure and leave…
I have never ever in my life seen an individual treat another individual in such a manner - what has our world come to - no individual is less important than any other individual, no matter their race, skin colour, orientation, religion, ethnicity or sex.
